North of Cape Town, the West Coast incorporates the West Coast National Park, well known for birds and spring flowers (in late August and September). Near Langebaan, the West Coast Fossil Park is a remarkable destination where visitors can journey back in time to explore the prehistoric wonders of the region. Here, amidst the rocky landscape, lies the fossil site of Langebaanweg, celebrated for its exceptionally well-preserved fossil faunal remains from the terminal Miocene / early Pliocene period. Within the parks boundaries, visitors can view the ancient remnants of bears, sabre-tooth cats, short-necked giraffes, and other fascinating creatures that once roamed the area.

Three powerful nations shaped the Eastern Cape of today. This is where the British, the Xhosa and the Afrikaner fist made contact over 200 years ago. The first frontier war broke out in 1780 and marked the beginning of the Xhosa struggle to preserve their traditional customs and way of life. In 1820 the British Settlers arrived and theirs was a struggle to create a new life for themselves in a wild and untamed environment. Both these struggles came head to head and still today, this area is known as Frontier Country. Now no longer the scene of conflict and strife, Frontier Country remains spectacularly beautiful. Here is where one can experience untamed Africa at its best, view the Big 5 in malaria-free reserves rich in bio-diversity while history awaits you around every corner.
